The Chicago Cubs placed left-hander Matthew Boyd on the 15-day injured list Monday with a biceps strain and recalled right-hander Javier Assad from Triple-A Iowa.

Boyd, 35, is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA over two starts with the Cubs this season after he gave up three runs in a 2 1/3-inning relief appearance for the United States in the World Baseball Classic.

Boyd was able to throw a side session Sunday, with the injury not considered serious.

An All-Star for Chicago in 2025, Boyd is 61-78 with a 4.59 ERA in 215 career appearances (201) starts for the Toronto Blue Jays (2015), Detroit Tigers (2015-21, 2023), Seattle Mariners (2022), Cleveland Guardians (2024) and Cubs.

Assad is expected to start the Cubs' road game on Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays. He had a 9.00 ERA without a decision in two starts at Iowa after he was 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in two starts for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic.

Over the previous four seasons with the Cubs, Assad is 18-12 with a 3.43 ERA in 78 appearances (54 starts).
